The lead up to the 1st day of the rest of our lives.....
Well legless really isn't the correct terminology I've discovered.... Matt has 'a good length' for an amputee I'm told by a fellow amp and to be honest, there's alot more leg there than I anticipated!
Those of you who know us well will know that this amputation decision was not one that years and research and many appointments contributed to. Matt's original surgeon who plated and screwed his pelvis back together and did his initial trauma work, referred him to a Professor who is one of the best nerve specialists in Sydney. We were told by him that it would take at least 3 years to know what was going to happen with Matt's leg, because of the rate the nerve tries to repair and find alternate paths to the foot to connect again. Every little bit of movement he gained was so exciting! But as the years went on & the excitement grew, his foot had other idea's and caused him more and more pain, less sleep, more sleep deprived insanity and a deformity that caused his pain threshold to sit on around 8 to 10, out of 10, on the nurses pain scale. It was no way to live meaningfully or with the zest we all know Matt has. Anyway, one surgeon led to another and this is how we all ended up here camping in St Leonards, with Matt 3 minutes walk in Royal North Shore Private! His awesome surgeon Les Gruijic, has been an earthy godsend to our worlds with an energy that is just beautiful! He was the only specialist that got down on a small stool and sat below Matt; held his foot; touched his withering calf muscle and got down to the how's, why's and realities of what he was going through for real. Which is why Matt chose Les!
So small history past aside, here we are at RNSP! The lead up of this last week was so intense for the entire family!!! Not just for the upcoming changes we were all about to experience with this very cool Dad & husband, but for the blessings of the community spirit and beautiful, incredible friends we have in our worlds, who banded together and created the concert of the Hawkesbury in support of Matt and his decision. It was (and still is) the most humbling, beautiful thing for us. And it has played it's part hugely in Matt's recovery process so far. That jar of good wishes, jokes and heartfelt art and wishes - amazing! The buzz from everyone's love and support, lingering still and will for a very, very long time. The messages, the calls, the love, the offers of help, support, talks, hugs and more and more love..... wow!!! We are one blessed, lucky family. Firstly to still have Matt, and secondly to be able to call such unique and selfless humans, our friends. Even meeting new friends for the day on Sunday, offering themselves, their time, their support and hugs. Beautiful. Thank you to each and every person no matter what contribution of self, words, love, hugs or dollars.... you all made the most amazing difference to Matt and our family, so much that words can't give the truth of the depth of our love and emotions from you. xxxx
